In this tutorial you'll learn how to repair a sticky, stuck, jumpy or dead GM speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, oil pressure gauge, volt meter, water temperature gauge and transmission temperature gauge. The parts and tools needed are available here: GM Stepper Motors.

After pulling off the trim bezel by hand they have no screws on most models, they just pop off by pulling firmly.
Remove them and you will then be able to angle the instrument cluster out. You may need to tilt the steering wheel down and move the shifter down to make room. There will be one electrical plug in the back. You remove it by squeezing the tabs together and then pull back firmly while wiggling.
It can be seized in place, pull and wiggle firmly and it will break loose. Next up you'll need to remove the clear plastic lens. You'll need to use a small tool to pry out on the tabs while pulling up on the lens assembly to remove it.
Work your way around one tab at a time, you can insert a pencil or similar item between the lens and the body to hold them apart while working your way around. Ok now you'll need a few pieces of masking tape and a pen or marker. Rotate all the needles counter clockwise gently until the come to a stop, they should all stop at or just below the zero marks. Now make a pen mark on the tape just below the top of each needle.
This will be important when you put it back together to maintain calibration so don't skip this step. Now that you've made your calibration marks firmly rotate each needle further counter clockwise a few inches.
You'll be rotating the needle around the motor's shaft so there will be some resistance especially at first. Don't worry, you won't break the needle if you keep your fingers near the base of the needle and away from the tip while you do this step. Now pry upwards with a needle removal tool or even a fork, try to pry straight up and not at an angle, the needle will slide right off the motor shaft.
Remove all the needles. Now pry outwards on the tabs of the back case to remove it, similar to how you removed the front lens. Now you can simply lift out the circuit board. In the final pic you can see 7 white stepper motors you'll be replacing. Ok you're now ready to remove the old gm stepper motors and replace them with new ones.
Use the de-soldering bulb and the solder iron to suck off the old solder on each of the four pins of each motor. Do not get it too hot for too long or you can damage the circuit board. Now you can pop the motors off the front of the board once all the old solder has been removed. If it's they're too difficult to remove you need to suck off more solder. Now you simply need to pop your new GM stepper motors where the old ones were, they will only install in one direction so you don't have to worry about mixing them up or getting it wrong.
Chevrolet TrailBlazer (2002-2009) fuses and relays
Make sure you get the correct part number when you buy your stepper motors see link above for correct parts. Then you use the solder and iron to solder on a small amount of solder to each motor's pin.
The solder should flow on smoothly, quickly and cool to a even shiny finish if done properly. Place the circuit board back into the white center housing and snap on the black back housing. Now slide each needle back onto the shaft of each new motor being careful to slide it on smoothly and straight down not at an angle, to prevent bending the motor shafts.
It doesn't matter what angle the needle is pointed at this step but, to make it easy slide them on pointing roughly at the position.

Finally, rotate each needle counter clockwise until the tip of the needle points right to the mark on the masking tape that you made in a previous step.
Remove tape and snap clear lens back on making sure to line up the odometer selector stalk. Clean the lens before installing if needed. You're now ready to re-install the cluster and test our your gm instrument cluster repair job!I have narrowed it down to a wiring problem from the liftgate to the body. Specifically the larger orange wire and small blue wire. I believe there must be a short inside the insulation over the wire. I am wondering if I can change out the ammeter connector; strip some of the coating off the the wire behind where I believe the break is and reattach it. I cannot see how the wire is attached inside the ammeter connector. Is it soldered? Or is it just crimped?
OR can I bypass the entire ammeter connector on either side and just wire the two sides together? Please help! I am a single mother who cannot afford to take this in for repair! I appreciate your time. I installed the new struts and cut out the bad section of the wire, soldered in a new length of wire and used heat shrinking tape over the solder joints. It worked. Unless you can see an obvious problem a TVM is your friend. Manipulating wires indicates the source of the problem.
It is a broken wire or a bad connector. A broken wire can be repaired with an inexpensive butt connector or 2, and a piece of wire if needed. You can buy an inexpensive tool to remake connections in the plug if needed. Thank you for your suggestions!! Anything is worth a try! You should not create separate posts for the same problem. The easiest way to find a broken wire is to try pulling on it. Support one end using a smooth jawed pliers so as not to damage the insulation and avoid applying strain to the rest of the wire.Specialty: engine, electrical, general repair, diagnostic, some hybrid, gravy jobs, turd polisher.
Pretty good day, first replaced and flashed an ECM for an 07 Cadillac Escalade that had intermittent no crank and P Then finally figured out how to use the PTP ll to replace and unlock a radio on an 07 Silverado Classic, not sure how many GM radios this will work on but it should be able to unlock any GM radio that is flashable.
Then figured out how to use it to do a 10 minute pass key relearn. Then came the 02 trailblazer. I successfully erased the memory then got aboutof aboutbytes programmed when it stopped, the lap top bleeped a couple of times and error codes E and E came up. I had the fuse 6 and fuse 51 removed as prescribed. Tried a couple more times but can only get about bytes to load. Maybe the Eprom chip or whatever they call it in there is weak and can't handle the reflash?

I would isolate the PCM from the rest of the Class 2 bus. Let us know how it goes! If I can dig up another back up I'll give it a try in the morning, Why is this particular PCM suseptable to interference from other devices during flashing, Ive never had a problem with any other GM product, I would think that there is other activity on the class 2 serial data line on other GM products during flashing, maybe the data devices addresses are similar?
I don't know what makes this network so special. A few weeks ago I had a similar experience with a Trailblazer and cutting off the other modules allowed for a successful reflash used the Tech 2 though. It is important NOT to turn off the key unless instructed to do so by the software if a reflash fails, as this usually signals the PCM that the file transfer is complete. I checked the relays underneath the hood I did so by swapping them out with a different component an example the horn High Beam lights and they work I don't really even know where to start I've never had problems with the rear window wiper and washer please help thank you. Go to the under hood fuse block and check fuse 7 and relay They are listed as powering the rear window washer. Now go to the fuse block under the rear seat on the driver's side. Check fuse 9, it's listed as powering the wiper motor.
But since the wiper and the washer are powered by separate circuits, it puzzles me how they both quit at the same time But anyway, start by checking the fuses and relay I listed. Let us know what happened. GM doesn't want you to start the engine, and have the wiper come on unintentionally while frozen to the rear window, and burn out the motor.
So reset it by turning it Off then On to reset it. Tell me if that works. FJ answered about a year ago. On our platform, 2 things I'd look out for. Like the previous guy said, open the liftgate, check the rubber grommets up top and look for freyed or broken wires.
On the water, operate the rear washer, do you hear the pump? Front and rear pumps are located on the front of the windshield wiper fluid reservoir. If you do hear the pump, go lift the liftgate and look for water at the latch. I myself have had the tube pop off the back of the nozzle, it's too short, which will spray water inside the gate. I just lengthened the tube, done deal.
Justin answered about a year ago. The fuse box under the rear seat with the fuse number 9 that operates the rear wiper motor is actually a 15 amp 4 volt automatic reset circuit breakers and I cannot find one anywhere in my city. However I did start my truck turn on the rear wiper switch and check to see if I was getting power to that fuse and I'm not. Would it be such a switch is bad?Forums New posts Search forums.

So then a day came when it started raing The car continued to run and the speedomter worked, but the power windows did not, neither did the gas gauge,oil,battery,air conditoner,power locks and back wiper. Next day the rain stopped and everything worked fine. Now its only when it rains.
I lose power to everything I just mentioned but the headlights and tailights still work. I had someone put it on a computer to get the codes, the codes go to the tailgate control module.
